Kolpuli or Tamarind in English (Tamarindus Indica is the botanical name) is another
essential ingredient that is widely used in the cooking of all different varieties of Kerala
fish curry. Tamarind refers to the fruit that is obtained from a tree that is found in various
tropical regions that includes India and other South East Asian countries. Apart from fish
curry, tamarind is also used as an ingredient to add taste and flavor to sauces,
marinades and chutneys.
The wide usage of Kolpuli in spicy Kerala recipes is not just because of its exquisite
flavor alone. This Ayurvedic spice has a lot of medicinal qualities as well. The presence
of components like polyphenols enables Kolpuli to have antioxidant and anti-
inflammatory properties. Also Kolpuli helps to fight diseases such as heart disease,
